Even with so many LED signs installed, a lot of people still have misconceptions about them. One concern we hear a lot from city officials and residents is that the signs run distracting, too-bright video content.
Too flashy for us
They tell us, “We don’t want our city to look like Las Vegas.” They’re worried that electric signs will give their town a gaudy vibe.
If this issue comes up at a city council meeting, what can your customers say to help the development of reasonable sign codes?
What happens in Vegas . . .
Tell your customers to point out that the high-resolution, large video displays in Las Vegas, Times Square or pro sports venues are there to entertain people and get them excited.
On the other hand, retailers use an LED sign as an advertising medium. The sign helps them compete in the market place, which in turn benefits the city’s tax base. Many businesses also use their signs to run public service announcements.
Retailers and nonprofits should encourage their community to pass regulations appropriate for the area. For example, officials might prohibit flashing and/or full-motion video. You’ll want to sell displays with software that allows it to conform to even the most conservative codes.
Video vs. static changes
The operator can also program the sign so that transition from one message to the next is imperceptible. The transitions resemble a slide show presentation, not a movie. People need to understand that these smaller signs need multiple frames to display an entire message. A sign may be capable of animation and movement, but it can be programmed easily to use cycling imagery only.
Never too bright
Also, signs manufactured by a reputable supplier are equipped with automatic dimming technology that allows for the adjustment of light according to ambient light conditions. This component ensures signs will be appropriately lit in a variety of ambient lighting conditions.
