In light of Football’s Big Game this Sunday, we thought it appropriate to take a look at the opportunities and revenue that might be achieved through a relationship between digital advertising display owners and the sports industry.
A growing trend in the world of OOH advertising is the unique use of both roadside digital displays and on premise advertising displays at collegiate and professional sports facilities.
Purchasing advertising space to promote upcoming games or events is nothing new for sports teams or even schools, but the actual purchase of digital billboards is. The Dallas Cowboys, Arizona Cardinals and MetLife Stadium, home to both the New York Giants and New York Jets, are just a few big names who have dipped their toes into the world of digital billboards for their respective organizations.
The logic behind these purchases boil down to two main points, free promotion for your team or organization, and additional revenue from the remaining advertising spaces.
Now, some organizations may feel that managing and maintaining their own digital billboards would take too much time or additional resources. After all, you have to train someone to run the software, and you have to sell your advertising space.
If that’s the case you could implement the model the New York Mets have been using.
Instead of running the display themselves, the Mets contacted Clear Channel Outdoor, an Out of Home media advertising company, to handle the day-to-day digital billboard operations. This option gives the Mets an avenue to advertise upcoming games and promotions, while not having to worry about the operational aspects.
Let us state again that this trend isn’t solely for professional sports organizations to take advantage of. Colleges, regardless of division or size, could purchase a digital billboard to promote both their campus and upcoming sporting events, while still allocating advertising space for third parties.
Lastly, if you are operating digital billboards and looking to fill advertising space, local schools and sports teams are a great option. Digital advertising displays provide the flexibility to offer real-time game scores and countdowns to game day or other events.
This is a trend that we only see growing as more and more people become aware of the available options. If you have questions, or think you may be interested in doing something like this don’t hesitate to email outdoor@daktronics.com.
