Daktronics contributed to the team effort by replacing 62 Dynamic Messages Signs (DMS) across Middle and East Tennessee.

“Daktronics was able to deliver and support Stansell Electric throughout the projects, including the expedited installation schedule,” said Michael Standley, Daktronics project manager. “Stansell Electric needed to get these projects completed quickly. Our Daktronics team was able to work closely with them to deliver on deadline.”

These full-color, high-resolution DMS increased messaging capabilities such as graphics and image-posting.

This digital roadway sign technology delivers flexibility for state officials and simplifies communication with the ability to provide real-time information on brighter, clearer digital signs.

DMS provides at-a-glance information on travel times, congestion warnings, weather conditions and other situational messages that help travelers make informed decisions so they can reach their destination safely.

"Reliable digital displays are key for transportation agencies that must convey critical safety and travel information,” said Jason Morrison, Daktronics ITS, Parking & Public Transport market manager. “In fact, according to a study from the University of Rhode Island, DMS graphics produce a 35 percent faster recognition time than text alone.”

That’s crucial during emergency situations such as severe weather or when there’s an Amber Alert, because travelers can stay informed in real time. Officials can also notify motorists about upcoming lane closures or speed limit changes during construction or after an accident. They may even opt to display safety campaign messaging such as “no texting and driving.”

Industry standards such as NTCIP, NEMA and MUTCD continue to update specifications to support the installation of high-resolution, full-color DMS. In turn, ITS technology is sharper, more efficient and more intelligent than ever.

These projects exemplify the commitment of Daktronics and Stansell Electric to innovation, safety and excellence in delivering critical infrastructure projects that benefit the people of Tennessee.
