One evening this summer, instead of running tenant promotions and ads on its Daktronics video board, Oakbrook shopping center showed Despicable Me. The Illinois mega mall is using its digital display to offer the community a family movie night.
The flexibility of large-format LED digital displays allows mixed-use developments and sports venues to host family-friendly events. In return, a popular outdoor video board becomes a landmark, generating greater interest and more sales.
Oakbrook’s free Movies on the Green program offers family favorites on their LED video screen that’s “large enough to make your favorite characters come to life.”
National Harbor, a Washington, D.C., waterfront community, displayed Shark Week episodes on their LED video display. In addition, families enjoy the ocean breezes while attending Movies on the Potomac every Sunday. Just bring lawn chairs.
Sports stadiums are part of this trend as well. They’re maximizing the use of their video boards while raising their community profiles. Here are a few examples:
- This August, TCF Bank Stadium, Minneapolis, Minnesota, invited the public to “kick back and relax on the field with a blanket” and watch Field of Dreams.
- The University of Wisconsin sponsors “Movie Night at Camp Randall,” offering seating on the field or in the south end zone stands to watch movies such as Remember the Titans.
- Louisiana Tech will play The Great Gatsby as part of their movie event that includes free food and drinks.
