Steps

  1. Navigate to the Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Express download page.

  2. Click on "Download" and in the window that comes up, scroll down until you see "MgmtStudio 32BIT\SQLManagementStudio_x86_ENU.exe" and click on the check box next to the name (select this option regardless of the OS used).

  3. Once the download finishes, run the installer.
  4. Select the directory you wish to extract the installation to and then click "Ok."
  5. The SQL Server Installation Center will launch after extraction is finished. Click on "New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation."
  6. At the Microsoft Update window, leave the checkbox for "Use Microsoft Update to check for updates (recommended)" unchecked and then click "Next." (NOTE: Install may quickly bypass the Microsoft Update, Product Updates and Install Rules windows.)
  7. In the Installation Type window, select "Add features to an existing instance of SQL Server 2014" and then click "Next."
  8. In the Feature Selection window, select "Management Tools - Basic" and then click "Next" ("Management Tools - Complete" will auto select when "Management Tools - Basic" is selected).
  9. Let the installer run. Once installation is complete, select "Close."
