How to Troubleshoot / Test a Power over Ethernet (PoE) Injector

  • How can I verify a PoE (DC injector) is working properly and passing signal through when the radio cannot be confirmed working?

Steps

  1. Plug a Cat5 Ethernet cable into the computer's Network Interface Card.
    • This is usually a standard Ethernet port.
  2. Plug another Cat5 Ethernet cable into the D-Link adapter.
  3. Connect both Ethernet cables to the PoE **WITHOUT POWER**.
    • The PoE is working as a female/female Ethernet cable adapter without the 12v power plugged into it.
  4. Check the 'Adapter Settings' under 'Network and Sharing Settings' and verify the 'Local Area Connection' for the Network Interface Card and D-Link Adapter both say Unidentified Network.
    • This may say 'Ethernet 1' on Windows 8 computers.
    • If the PC's Network Interface Card stays "identifying" instead of "Unidentifed" this may point back to the D-Link as the issue even if it's network connection shows "Unidentified". 
      • Either drop use of the D-Link all together and use the computer's normal ethernet port or may try disabling/re-enabling D-Link
  5. If the 'Local Area Connection' says "Network Cable Unplugged", the PoE is bad and needs to be replaced.
