Failed to save the presentation because of an unexpected error: registry values set incorrectly

Potential Symptoms

  • When attempting to save a new presentation or message in Content Studio, the following error is generated:
    Failed to save the presentation because of an unexpected error.  See log file for the error details.
  • Additionally when opening a presentation in Content Studio, some type of error will be generated.
  • When going to My Documents/Documents, right-clicking and selecting Properties the Library Locations may or may not include:
    • My Documents (C:\Users\[user profile]).
    • Public Documents (C:\Users\Public).
    • However, if the Restore Defaults button is pressed the My Documents (C:\Users\[user profile]) disappears if present or doesn't appear if missing to begin with.
  • Attempted When saving a new presentations get error Failed to save the presentation because of an unexpected error Venus 1500 v4, DD2259773 but did not resolve.
  • When you check the error logs you are getting "... System. UriFormatException: Invalid URI: The URI is empty."

Cause

  • Registry entries for Shell Folders and User Shell Folders set incorrectly (may point to a drive not in existence) or to a shared drive that is not connected.
    • If it is a shared drive that is listed, verify under My Computer that it is available, and make sure it's connected.

Resolution

NOTE !!: INCORRECT MODIFICATION OF THE REGISTRY CAN CAUSE THE OPERATION SYSTEM TO BECOME NON-FUNCTIONAL OR RESULT IN ABNORMAL BEHAVIOR. THE FOLLOWING SHOULD BE PERFORMED BY AN IT PROFESSIONAL.

  1. First create a system restore point.
  2. Open up the registry editor (Start>> search for regedit).
  3. Secondly, back up the current registry.
  4. Navigate to the following registry location: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders.
  5. Look for the Personal entry (Personal = My Documents); check to see what the value is currently set to.
    • Normally it should be set to C:\Users\[user name/profile]\Documents  ([user name/profile] is the name of user account in question.
    • It may be currently pointing to a location that does not exist (e.g. disconnected network drive).
  6. Next, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
  7. Look for the Personal entry name's "Data".
    • It should normally be set to %USERPROFILE%\Documents verbatim.
  8. Right click on the Personal entry name and select modify and enter in %USERPROFILE%\Documents in the Value data: location.  After doing so, then close out of the registry editor and reboot the computer.
  9. Upon reboot, go to Start>>Documents.
  10. In Windows Explorer, right-click on Documents and select Properties.
  11. Press the Restore Defaults button, followed by Apply and Ok, then verify My Documents (C\Users\[user name/profile]) appears.
  12. Open up Venus and verify files are able to be saved.
