Received error 26 while installing Venus 1500 v4.18.1 or higher, Network not allowing services to start.
Potential Symptoms
- Receive the following error when installing v4.18.1 or greater:
- A Network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and the SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance specified)
- When trying to manually start the SQL Server (NUCLEUS) receive the following error:

The SQL Server (NUCLEUS) service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not used by other services or programs.
- When in the error log location below, you will see the following error:
- Typical SQL Install ERRORLOG can be found at the following location, and depending on the Summery, it will indicate the exact error log:
- Windows 32 Bit - C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.NUCLEUS\MSSQL\Log
- Windows 64 Bit - C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.NUCLEUS\MSSQL\Log

Cause
- Our Venus 1500 v4 installer directs the SQL Server to install and to run on Local Computer. Some computer networks and domains cannot allow services to start and run as this setting. This will require a manual install of the SQL and instead of choosing NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM the NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK will need to be selected.
Resolution
- Backup Database.
- If SQL is still operational, follow How do I use the Nucleus Server Database utility to transfer or save a database?
- If SQL is NOT operational, follow How do I backup my database if SQL is uninstalled?
- Uninstall SQL Server if it is present following How to remove/uninstall SQL Server 2005, 2008 or 2014, DD3522855.
- Manually install the SQL Server 2008 by following How to Install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Manually for Venus 1500 v4 or Vanguard v4 (This does not apply for Show Control Display Studio), DD2474426.
- Be sure in step 12 to choose NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK under the Account Name.
