Receive error "Nucleus Service not running. Nucleus Service Failed to load."

Potential Symptoms

  • Receive error "Nucleus Service not running. Nucleus Service Failed to load." when trying to launch Venus 1500 v4.17 or below.
    • Nucleus service not running. Nucleus Service failed to load.
  • When viewing the Nucleus Error Logs found C:\Program Files\Daktronics\Nucleus Server\Logs  or  C:\Program Files (x86)\Daktronics\Nucleus Server\Logs view the following error:
    • Message: An error occurred creating the configuration section handler for system.serviceModel/bindings: Could not load type 'System.Security.Authentication.ExtendedProtection.Configuration.ExtendedProtectionPolicyElement' from assembly 'System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089'. (C:\Program Files\Daktronics\Nucleus Server\Nucleus Server.exe.Config line 296)

Environment

  • Product Family: Software

  • Component: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1
  • Control System: Venus 1500 v4.17 and lower

Cause

  • Microsoft provided a Windows update to the XP and Vista Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, that breaks the Nucleus Server.exe.config file. The Nucleus Server then cannot start properly. Venus 1500 v4.18.1 and greater no longer uses .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and now uses .NET Framework 4.
    • Note: You will get this error if attempting to run Venus on a MacBook because .NET will not install on a Mac trying to run Windows on a virtual machine.
