What are the video scaling recommendations with VIP-4000 or VIP-4500?

Potential Symptoms

  • What are the video scaling recommendations with VIP-4000 or VIP-4500?
  • What are the vertical scaling limitations for the VIP-4000 and VIP-4500?

Environment

  • Product Family: Video software and controllers
  • Product: Video Image Processor
  • Components: VIP-4000, VIP-4500
  • Control System:

Resolution

If the resolution of the video display's surface does not match video format's aspect resolution, the image must be scaled and /or cropped to match the native resolution of the display. Scaling is the process of converting image data from one resolution to another resolution.  This involves a mathematical adjustment of individual pixels.  The quality of the image can be impacted by an image that is not properly scaled.

Use the charts below to determine the best options for your display.

VIP upscaling limitations for video input sources:

For the video input sourceVIP upscaleScale factor
1080p30less than 3 timesViewable area height or 1080 x 3 ? display zone height
1080iless than 1.5 timesViewable area height or 1080 x 1.5 ? display zone height
720p HDless than 2.8 timesViewable area height or 720 x 2.8 ? display zone height
480iless than 8 timesViewable area height or 480 x 8 ? display zone height
  • If you enter settings greater than the upscaling limit, the command will fail to be executed correctly, resulting in an 'ERR' message or possibly no message at all. The VIP will attempt to apply those settings, but the settings won't be saved correctly. This can cause the display to appear misaligned after a reboot, even though the settings will appear to be correct in the configuration.
  • It is recommended that you follow the same rules when addressing the Viewable Area Width. The width is not limited in the same way as the height, but the same rules apply to maintain the aspect ratio.

Options to remedy:

  • Increase the height of the viewable area setting

-or-

  • Decrease the height of the zoned area setting

If neither of the above options resolve the issue when applied individually, the height of both the Viewable Area and the Window Area need to be changed.
