Audio: My wireless microphones are cutting out
Topic
- What can I do if my wireless microphone is cutting out?
Environment
- Sportsound 500HD, 1500HD, 2000HD, SSN-150, SSN-250, Custom
- SSR-100, SSR-200, SSR-300, Custom
- Wireless Microphones
Steps
If more than one wireless mic system is present, isolate each receiver to determine if issue is only present on one assembly, or possibly interacting with other devices.
- Check RF power to ensure it is set to HI. *QLX-D assembly.
- Unscrew sleeve to access buttons. Push to the left for MENU, right for ENTER, and up/down to change setting.
- Press MENU to cycle through until "RF power" is displayed.
- Press UP to change to "Hi" setting.
- Press RIGHT to enter setting.
- Ensure Transmitter and Receiver Antenna are in clear line of sight (receiver antennas set 45 degrees like rabbit ears), if not, adjust accordingly or relocate receive antenna to be in line of sight to field.
- Extension kits for antennas are available, refer to How far can a microphone receiver antenna be extended? .
- Ensure referee is placing transmitter on belt properly. Refer to: SportSound/Audio: Feedback coming from the system. .
- Check the firmware on the receiver/transmitter. Update if necessary. How to update firmware on Shure QLX-D wireless equipment. .
- For QLXD assemblies ensuring a clean frequency is being used by turning off the transmitter and ensuring that there are no RF bars showing on the front of the receiver. If bars are present, tune to a different frequency that is clean.
- When you have a clean frequency, ensure you have good RF when the transmitter is turned on at the field level. You want the largest number of RF bars displayed on the receiver. If it's less than 3, something needs to be done to improve the reception.
- Some Shure wireless receivers have built in spectrum analyzers. You could download the latest version of "Shure Wireless Workbench 6" and connect to the receiver and then more accurately look to see what is going on. You can look at a plot for example of the transmitter in the press box, right outside the press box (taking the glass into play), and then going down to the field (taking the glass and the distance into play). You can monitor to see how much attenuation you are getting and with that we can more accurately advise on a solution.
Ensure proper frequency is selected per area. Refer to following website:
https://www.shure.com/americas/support/tools/wireless-frequency-finder- Enter in the address, city, state, or zip code at the venue.
- Select the wireless series, normally printed on the front of the wireless receiver.
- Leave the I'm using multiple bands or systems together box unchecked.
Example:
Ensure the wireless device is set in the frequency range of a "Reserved" channel. If no "Reserved" channels are available, use an "Available" frequency.

- LED lighting can cause interference with wireless signals. Turn off any LED lights and see if that fixes the problem. If so recommend they not use LED lighting
- If all of the above is being done, but drop outs are still happening, purchase High Gain Antenna Kit to increase signal strength.
