The Power of One Show Control Button
During their 2018 playoff appearance, the San Jose Sharks gave their fans something that they’re sure to not forget any time soon, with an epic Playoff game intro segment. The SAP Center Staff and Daktronics Applications Engineer, Katrina Stackpole, collaborated to take a complicated, multi-step show and simplify it down to one click of a button from their Show Control monitor.

Year after year, game-day production teams are challenged to up their game with a fan experience that meets or exceeds what fans can get at home. As we covered in our earlier post, Daktronics makes these complex show elements easier to execute by syncing your entire system. We highlighted a couple examples from Perth Stadium in Australia and University of Georgia basketball. We’re back with another example from the SAP Center in San Jose, California.
During their 2018 playoff appearance, the San Jose Sharks gave their fans an epic Playoff game intro segment they’re sure to remember. The SAP Center Staff and Daktronics Applications Engineer, Katrina Stackpole, collaborated to take a complicated, multi-step show and simplify it down to one click of a button from their Show Control monitor.
The Process
The first step to implementing the big show was to develop the content. The SAP Center staff turned their centerhung into a single canvas, allowing the pixel-accurate content to span across all displays to feature one cohesive image. This single-canvas-styled content for the entire centerhung was then synced to their 360-degree fascia display. A Daktronics DMP-8000 was used to drive audio for the venue along with video for the concourse HD displays.
A second Daktronics DMP-8000 player was then used to coordinate time code for the light up wristbands that fans wore in the venue (RFID Wristbands), the on-ice projections content, along with the DMX lighting cues for the Sharks Head mechanisms and moving lights. All of this integration was programmed within a single Show Control button, which streamlined the overall production and provided this playoff intro environment.
The Result
The result of the behind-the-scenes work speaks for itself in the video footage above. The intro segment built anticipation for the playoff game and amped up the crowd for player introductions. The best part? This big moment was created without overextending the production crew. One of Sharks team members said, “I think it turned out phenomenal and we did it all with one person pushing one button once the content was made; a lot of stress-free people in the control room those nights.”
