Spring is in the air and baseball is back in action! That means that teams from coast to coast are hosting fans as they compete in America’s pastime. And, five of those teams and two of those Spring Training venues are using new Daktronics equipment!

Detroit Tigers

We’ll start in Detroit where the Tigers unveiled the second-largest LED video display in the major leagues. The new outfield feature at Comerica Park consists of more than 15,000 square feet of digital space with 14.1 million pixels! It measures roughly 67 feet high by 185 feet wide with a lower component measuring nearly 35 feet high by 96 feet wide to create a single outfield display using 10-millimeter pixel spacing.

“Our company takes great pride in providing professional sports customers with the latest technology and overall digital real estate to execute their complex and engaging game-day experiences,” said Daktronics President and CEO Reece Kurtenbach. “This project for the Detroit Tigers will elevate the atmosphere at Comerica Park for their fans and we’re thrilled to once again partner with their team on a sizeable stadium improvement project featuring LED technology.”

As we know, going to the game isn’t ONLY about the main displays that show all the replays and stats that we love. There are many other digital displays throughout stadiums that enhance the overall experience. The Tigers tapped into those opportunities with two ribbon boards, an LED display below the main video and long, narrow displays on the front, top edge of each dugout – a new trend in today’s baseball venues.

San Diego Padres

On the West Coast, the Padres also installed additional signage to their ballpark. This includes ribbon displays, an outfield wall display and backstop displays behind home plate. And that’s only in the main stands!

Outside of the seating bowl, the Padres worked with Daktronics to install displays in concession areas, entry gates and at a playball field. They even added video displays to a stage area called Gallagher Square next to the field.

These displays allow multiple opportunities to engage with fans, share sponsorship messages and overall elevate the game-day experience in San Diego.

Philadelphia Phillies

Adding to their main video display that was installed last year, the Phillies asked Daktronics to install a new LED fence display in their outfield. This brings new light to out-of-town scores, statistics and additional advertising opportunities for the team.

St. Louis Cardinals

If you’re heading to a ballgame in St. Louis, you’re going to see new backstop displays as well as a new third baseline display. Aside from elevating sponsorship opportunities behind home plate with the backstop displays, those ads can also be captured by television cameras and look great on broadcasts and game streams. Then along the baseline, additional graphics and statistics bring more engaging content to Cardinals baseball games and its fans.

Colorado Rockies

It’s well known that the Rockies have one of the most creative main video displays in sports – I mean, it matches their logo! To go along with the existing LED signage, the team has added a new stair tower display to Coors Field. Just another opportunity to engage with fans and brand the experience as a memorable trip to the ballpark!

Spring Training Venues

Main video displays are extremely important at sporting events. Have I said that yet? If not, I’m sure I could say it over and over again. After every big play, it’s second nature to look to the video board to see the replay, maybe even in slow motion, to see exactly how it played out.

That’s why Ed Smith Stadium, spring training home of the Baltimore Orioles, and Surprise Stadium, spring training home of the Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers, have both invested in new main video displays in their outfields.

Ed Smith Stadium’s display measures 24 feet high by 50 feet wide and features a 13HD pixel layout whereas Surprise Stadium’s display measures 32.5 feet high by 66 feet wide and features a 10-millimeter pixel spacing. Each of these venues leverages its technology to deliver all the views and replays fans expect during spring training.

What’s Next?

Obviously, it’s time to head to the ballpark and enjoy the 2024 baseball season! Check out the technology at these stadiums and I hope enjoy all that baseball has to offer.
