Combating Creative Cloud Confusion

In the technical world, software versions are simply a part of life. Developers roll out new versions for fixing bugs, improving performance, and adding new features at various times throughout the year. In the video display production industry, one of the most widely accepted platforms for content creation is Adobe After Effects.

In a perfect world, all of our computers would run the latest and greatest version of software, and project file compatibility would never be an issue, unfortunately this is not always the reality. Adobe, like many other software developers, has backwards compatibility, which allows users to open a project file from an older version in the newer version. There are some instances however, when you may need to open a file created in a new version, say CC 2015, in an older version such as CS6.

*Note that this method will require both CC 2015 and CS6 versions of After Effects.

To convert a project from AE CC 2015 to AE CS6

1. Install copies of both AE CS6 and AE CC on your computer if you do not already have them.
2. Open the project in After Effects CC 2015
3. “File > Save As > Save a Copy As CC (12)”
4. Open this newly created project in AE CC (don’t worry about missing plugins, etc. during this step)
5. “File > Save As > Save a Copy As CS6”

Open the 2^nd newly created project in CS6 and test it
