Unable to communicate to message display using USB to serial adapter, adapter not listed in Ports in Device Manager

Potential Symptoms

There is a quick flash of the Communication Progress Window and communication fails when attempting to get status or send messages to the display.
When looking in Device Manager, there is no adapter listed under Ports even though the USB adapter is plugged into the computer.

Environment

Product: Galaxy Message Centers
Component: Serial communication, USB to serial adapter (ex: Moxa, Prolific)
Control System: Venus 1500

Cause

USB adapter is no longer being recognized by the computer.

USB adapter not plugged into the computer.

Resolution

Unplug USB adapter, then reconnect to computer.

Plug USB adapter into the computer.

If adapter is not recognized after re-connecting to computer, reference:
