Galaxy, No communication, Controller has the wrong address

Potential Symptoms

  • No communication after replacing the controller, controller change, or on a new display.
  • Can put the controller into test mode and it will work.
  • May receive "Communication with the display timed out" alert in Venus 1500 V4.
    • Attempted connection takes a very long time (one attempt can take several minutes).
  • Will not be able to connect with M2-Config or Venus 1500, but can ping the display IP if using Ethernet communication.
  • Unable to connect to either display controller in a primary - primary setup, if they are set to the same address.

Environment

  • Product Family:  Message Center displays
  • Product:  Galaxy
  • Components: MDC, M2, M3 controllers
  • Control Systems:  Venus 1500 software V3, V4

Cause

  • The hardware address for the display in the Venus software and the controller do not match.
    • Note: The display start up sequence will display HW: X.  X represents the current hardware address setting that is set on the controller.

Resolution

  • Change the hardware address on the controller to match what is in Venus software.
    1. Access the controller in the display.
    2. Locate the upper and lower address dials on M2 or M3, check MDC dip switches (located on the backside of the bottom edge of top card of the controller).
    3. Move dials/dip switches into correct position for hardware address 1 or Single Face (SF)and 2V display and address 2 for second display in a Primary/Primary setup.
    4. Reboot display power.
    5. Confirm communication in Venus software.

For Temporary Operation

  • Change the hardware address in the Venus software to match that of the display.
    • This option is appropriate with new display configurations in Venus 1500.
    • Only utilize the work around if the hardware address does not conflict with another display configuration.
