- How to Install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Manually for Venus 1500 v4 or Vanguard v4?
- NOTE: (This does not apply for Show Control Display Studio)
Environment
- Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Only
Steps
It may be necessary to manually install the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Nucleus Instance.
- If the SA password needs to be changed to conform to different rules or policies. Typically effects Military or Highly Restricted Security Networks.
- If the user account needs to be changed from NETWORK_SERVICE to LOCAL_SYSTEM.
- This procedure must be completed before installing Venus 1500 v4, Vanguard v4, or Display Studio v1.
- Download Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express from Microsoft's Download Centere using newer Browser like Google Chrome or Fire Fox if possible. IE9 and older can cause some issues.
- Select Language and click Download.
- Choose SQLEXPR_x86_ENU.exe, and click Next.
*NOTE* Always use the x86 (32 bit) version regardless of OS on the computer.- You will need to allow Popups, and may need to click the Click Here to try download again.
- Select Save As, and save to the Desktop. If not able to see download like in IE 9 you have to find file on C drive and save to desk top.

- This is the only installer that can be manually installed, you cannot download or use any other type of Microsoft SQL Server 2008.
- The Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 is not supported by these directions.
- Run SQLEXPR_x86_ENU.EXE, This will open the SQL Server Installation Center.
- If you run into a .NET framework error Unhandled exception see When manually installing SQL 2008 receive: "An error occurred creating the configuration section handler for userSettings"
- From the SQL Server Installation Center, from the left menu click on Installation.
- Click on New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation.
- For Setup Support Rules, once passed all operations, click Ok.
- For Product Key, there is not one needed, click Next.
- Accept the license agreement and click Next.
- For Setup Support Files, click Install and Next.
- For Feature Selection, only check Database Engine Service, click Next.
- For Instance Configuration, select Named instance and enter in Nucleus and click Next.
- Make sure spelling is correct or it will not configure properly.
- For Disk Space Requirements, if you receive a Green Check, it means you meet requirements and can click Next.
- For Server Configuration, under the Service Accounts Tab for the SQL Server Database Engine, choose NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK under the Account Name and click Next.
- For Database Engine Configuration, under Account Provisioning select Mixed Mode (SQL Server Authentication and Windows Authentication).
- Enter in SA logon credentials. Venus 1500 v4 can use any password that is desired or required to meet SA Password Rules or Policies.
- Or by default SQLServer2008 can be used as the password.
- Some sites will have password requirements and will need their IT department to select the password. If this is the case you will receive the possible following error:
- Under Specify SQL Server administrators click Add Current User or add any additional users as needed.
- Click Next.
- Enter in SA logon credentials. Venus 1500 v4 can use any password that is desired or required to meet SA Password Rules or Policies.
- For Error and Usage Reporting, leave options unchecked and click Next.
- Under Installation Rules, click Next.
- Under Ready to Install, click Install.
- Under Installation Progress, click Next.
- Under Complete, you will receive a notice that Your SQL Server 2008 installation completed Successfully, click Close.
- You can close out of the SQL Installation Center.
